Hybrid Work Collaboration Tax (Update)

The hybrid teams paying the least tax have two rituals and fewer meetings.

In May I wrote that hybrid work changed how data teams collaborate and nobody adjusted the architecture. Four months of client conversations later, I’d add one thing to that.

Two of them keep showing up.

A blameless reliability review on a fixed schedule, covering near misses as well as incidents, so a quiet week still has something to look at. And a written decision log someone in another timezone can read without asking a human.

Both are boring. Both cost less than the recurring sync meeting they replace.

The teams still struggling usually have neither, plus a Slack channel where context goes to die. Someone’s offline for six hours and the work stops.

I don’t think this is universal. A colocated team with tight feedback loops gets away with far more informality, and good for them.
